SUMMARY:Toi Maori Wananga (Entry Level)
DESCRIPTION:Ka nui te mihi… We are happy to advise that Te Tautoko Ora is able to bring to Waiharakeke a series of wananga which are focussed on retention of te ao Maori toi mahi.  More importantly\, wananga that enable people to participate in a TOI mahi they have always wanted to do but never had the chance or opportunity. The wananga will focus on Raranga\, Whakairo and Taniko toi maori.  These crafts are no longer a practice of the many and with few practitioners available we are fortunate to have them come to Waikawa marae in 2022.  If you are keen to learn the basics then these wananga are the one for you.  We aim to move you to the intermediate and mastery levels so sign up today for your once-in-a-lifetime place. \nStructure of Wananga: These wananga are structured based on the ‘poutama’ method whereby learning is staircased from basic level to intermediate to masterate levels of matauranga & AND the first four wananga is the ‘BASICS’. We deliberately chose this method because for the preservation of TOI Maori taonga such as what Whakairo\, Raranga and Taniko require\, the learning needs to be deliberate and concentrated. Our Tutors bring their kete of TOI matauranga that has been developed over many many years from tohunga\, mahi mahi\, wananga o te Ao and their own personal journeys. \nThat is what makes these wananga rich in knowledge content that bridges past traditions with contemporary crafts of the 21st Century. The next four wananga will be the INTERMEDIATE level of content and the final four wananga will be the MASTER level of content. We are confident each wananga will grow you beyond your belief . E haere ana! E haere ana! ki te ako nga mea taonga o matou tupuna o mai rano. \nMahi WhakairoMahi Whakairo – Entry level will INTRODUCE participants to the  art of Maori carving\, Matua Pita Lagan will provide a brief overview of the introductory nature of the 4 poutama in the wananga from March-June.  After that Matua Pita will introduce attendees to the tools\, the resources on which whakairo can be done and the preparation work that goes into getting specific kinds of ‘wood resources’ ready’ from MDF board all the way up to the taonga rakau (treasured tree resources) of Matai\, Totara Kahikatea and other native trees and their particular features for carver practitioners. \nMahi Raranga and Taniko – Mahi raranga & taniko Entry level will INTRODUCE participants to the art of Raranga and Taniko. Taniko has been separated away from Raranga since it is a dying craft and these wananga want to focus on generating interest and passion for taniko since there is a concentrated interest and practice of Raranga throughout Aotearoa. Kurt Komene a leading contemporary and traditional practitioner of both Raranga and Taniko will take participants into the world of the tools and resources used in both Raranga and Taniko too\, and also the way in which to prepare resources such as harakeke\, and muka for both Raranga and Taniko for these wananga the entry level resources are limited to flax\, wool and string.
